A Wonderful Birthday Gift

It’s my birthday, today.

It’ almost incomprehensible that another year has passed – so quickly, too!

This merry-go-round of life keeps spinning faster and faster and faster.

Do you feel the same way?

This morning I’m seated in our Happy Blue School Room – reflecting and typing. Caleb and Jake have already set up their work spaces for today’s school work. They are joyfully walking about the house and outside in the front garden too – yes, joyfully – that’s what they do this time of day. Micah has retrieved his schedule for the week and is already planning his lesson-project-quiz game plan for the day. John is reading the previous day’s scores and highlights. It’s a calm, happy and pretty typical day in our house. I love that!

And, did I mention?

It’s my birthday. 🙂

If you asked me how I am doing today I would tell you that I feel content. In this wacky, unpredictable, things-seem-out-of-control world, I sit here feeling just-fine-thank-you-very-much!

Really.

Why?

To be honest, I believe it is a combination of things.

First, I’m in-over-my-head-in-love with my hope word study this year – if there is such a thing as being in love with a word called hope.  Call me crazy – but I am so delighted to be learning about the amazing hope that is mine in Christ. Sure, I’m a Believer and I’ve probably shared or written about the hope of Christ throughout my life. However, the Lord is doing something new and fresh in me as I study His word. I can’t wait to see what He brings forward each day! I believe having this feeling of hope-filled expectation is a phenomenal way to begin my day!

Second, I’m completely off of sugar this year. At least, I think I have been. I’ll be honest in that there may have been something one time or another that I ate that I didn’t know all of the ingredients. However, any sweet, sugary delight that has come my way, I’ve graciously declined. Daily, I bake and cook from scratch. Therefore, I have control of what goes into my food and sugar hasn’t been invited into the mix this year. Inside and out, I feel great!

Third, there is a lot to be worried and concerned about in this world. A lot. Yet, I have chosen to wholeheartedly seek the Lord over what is happening and trust Him. I have no idea what will happen today, tomorrow, or ever. However, my God does. I am resting in this truth. Really.

Fourth, I am embracing the lessons I have gleaned in my High Trust Leadership Course. This is my second time through the material and I cannot say enough about it. My identity is sure in Christ and nothing, absolutely nothing separates me from Him. I have really embraced this truth in the past year and a half. I am more grounded in Christ’s love than ever before and it’s exhilarating!

So, on my birthday, when I read these verses in my hope study, I smiled – I felt a special, little hug from my God:

David said about him:
“‘I saw the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest in hope,
because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
you will not let your holy one see decay.
You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence.’

New International Version, Acts 2: 25 – 28

What I love most about these verses is how Peter introduces the words of David,

“David said about Him….”

What???

You might want to inquire of me, “Heather, of all the words in these verses, you appreciate these four, fairly non-descript words?”

Yep.

What David said about Jesus was remembered, recorded, and retold!

And what David said is still being sought out and read – thousands of years later.

Just look at all the life-affirming words that David said about Jesus Christ – the Son of God –

David said:

Jesus, you are always before me.

David said:

Jesus, you are at my right hand.

David said:

Jesus, because of your nearness, your protection, your steadfastness, and your love – I will not be shaken.

David said:

Jesus, my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices because of you!

David said:

Jesus, because of you, I will always live in hope!

David said:

Jesus, you will never abandon me, not even after I die.

David said these words because David believed these words.

Do we?

Would we say as David did —

Jesus, you are always before me.
Jesus, you are at my right hand.
Jesus, because of your nearness, your protection, your steadfastness, and your love – I will not be shaken.
Jesus, my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices because of you!
Jesus, because of you, I will always live in hope!
Jesus, you will never abandon me, not even after I die.

Friends, as I celebrate my birthday today, I take hold of David’s words and make them my own. From time to time this morning, I’ve actually looked over to the right hand side of my body and envisioned that my Savior is right there – yep, call me content and crazy – but this is the vision of Jesus I want to hold onto for the remainder of my days. Because when I imagine Him sitting here, so near and so available, peace and joy abound within my heart!

And that truly makes the hope of Christ a wonderful birthday gift, don’t you think?

I’ll take it!
