What am I gonna be when I grow up?
How am I gonna make my mark in history?
And what are they gonna write about me when I’m gone?
These are the questions that shape the way I think about what matters
Well I have no guarantee of my next heartbeat
My world’s too big to make a name for myself
And what if no one wants to read about me when I’m gone?
It seems to me that
Right now’s the only moment that matters
You know the number of my days
So come paint Your pictures on the canvas of my head and
Come write Your wisdom on my heart
Teach me the power of a moment
The power of a moment
The power of a moment
Chris Rice’s song title, “Power of a Moment” served as the theme for Micah’s graduation party this weekend. Oh, what a special and meaningful time we shared with Micah and his South African family as we celebrated together!
Oh, how we wish we could have invited you all to jump the continents to be with us for this power-of-a-moment time!
Micah was joined by our family, OC Africa team, friends from church, neighbors, and friends from his drama team to celebrate his high school graduation from Alpha Omega Academy. We appreciate all who were able to attend in the midst of an incredibly full season to not only support and cheer Micah but also stand in the gap for all of our family and friends who could not be with us.
We are so appreciative of all the people in our lives who love Micah and have walked along side of him in life whether near or far.
Our program of events created a unique and special graduation day for Micah and our guests. Since so many of our guests represented various parts of Micah’s life, one of our desires was to help everyone get to know each other. We created name tags. Along with each person’s name, we indicated the year that they met Micah Man.
Then, we had everyone gather into groups according to these different years so that people had the opportunity to interact with some one important to Micah that they may not have known before the graduation party. Once we had everyone grouped, I shared four different year events in Micah’s life with our guests.
For example, the first year I offered was 2000. This was the year of Micah’s birth. After I shared the year’s fun fact, then each of the group members shared a fun fact about themselves with their group pertaining to that particular year. We had four different sharing moments for the years, 2000, 2006 (the year of Micah’s South Africa arrival), 2010 (the year of Micah’s baptism), and 2017 (the year of Micah’s graduation.) It was gratifying to see everyone share their stories and make connections with one another.
Next, I shared the verse I have been praying over Micah Man for the past three years and offered some words of encouragement to Micah.
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage. Be strong. Do everything in love.
New International Version, 1 Corinthians 6: 13 – 14
We are so happy that John made it back to South Africa from his sudden trip to Zimbabwe to present Micah with his diploma from Alpha Omega Academy. This was a huge blessing and surprise for Micah Man. First, to have his dad with us was a great gift after John has been away for much of the month. John spoke in honor of his son:
Second, without Micah’s knowledge, we asked Alpha Omega Academy for the diploma to be made and sent to us in time for Micah’s graduation party. His dad had the honor of presenting Micah with his official diploma before our South African family. That was a great moment!
Micah desired to express his thanks:
We then asked Karl and Jenny Teichert, our OC Africa team leaders, to share and then pray for Micah. What an encouraging and affirming word they blessed Micah with during that moment!
Afterwards, everyone gathered around Micah to pray for him.
What a great, great, great day! What a powerful moment in our family’s lives!
Thank you, our dear family and friends, for your love, care and investment in Micah’s life in countless ways over the course of his 17 years of life. We are proud of Micah and what he has accomplished and look forward to his future with joy and anticipation.
In appreciation of your support of our son, we dedicate these words:
We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. We continually remember before of our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor produced by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
New International Version, 1 Thessalonians 1: 2 – 3
Thank you, Friends!
Congratulations to Micah!
