Is this who you are?
A heavenly father?
One who looks upon us from a promised, eternal space?
Yet, a father who offers presence, protection, and care in times of joy and need?
A father who sent his son, Emmanuel to be with us always and forever?
Is this who you are, Lord?
Many are asking.
Today is Christmas.
It is a day to remember and honor and proclaim that Jesus Christ was born for the salvation of us all.
For Christ-followers like me, today commemorates the birth of Jesus, a baby sent to save. We believe that Jesus offers the gift of Himself. His gift brings us love, grace, care, assurance and salvation.
We believe that our Heavenly Father sent Jesus for all.
It is unfortunate, though.
Over time, over too much time, this amazing, life-giving, life-affirming message from you, O Heavenly Father, given fully and freely for the benefit of all has often been tempered. Changed, molded, shaped, cut, and sometimes even ripped and shredded, the thrill of Hope, has been distorted. The joy of Hope, the grace of Hope, and the blessing of Hope of Jesus Christ has not been offered to all. To fit different cultures’, different kingdoms’, different people of faiths’, and different wants and desires, we have often failed to communicate the Good News as you intended. And what has happened?
There are some who want no part of you, Heavenly Father.
They do not accept your Son.
They deny Him.
They reject You.
They live like they have no need of You, your Son, and your Spirit. No acknowledgment. No praise. No honor. No glory. No relationship. No hope. The meaning, significance and assurance of Christmas is lost.
For me, though, you are my Heavenly Father.
You are my Lord.
Jesus Christ is my Savior.
Holy Spirit is at work within me and I am grateful.
I do not understand how You do all that You do in my life, but I have experienced a lifetime of days with you – from early childhood. I know you walk with me, help me, and care for me in ways beyond my understanding and imagination.
You are my Comforter.
You are my Peace.
You are my Joy.
You are my Strength.
You are my Hope.
You are my Savior.
You are my Lord.
You are my Heavenly Father.
You are with me. And because of the love we share, I declare your name.
And now, I come to you with a request.
Will you help us do better? We must. Too many have no idea of who you are, Heavenly Father. They do not know your Son, Jesus. Instead, they want nothing to do with Him or You. Will you help us love others with more grace? Will you guide our words? Help us interact with people who do not know you – who doubt you, who deny you, who reject you. May we listen more and defend less. Extinguish the flames of our self-righteousness. Instead, fill us. Fill us with the wondrous joy, expectant hope, and blessed grace of your Spirit. May we share the gift of love your Son in a way that meets people right where they need to be met, heard, and honored. You did it for us. You came for us. You came for them. You came for all. We need to remember this, Lord. We are not part of some exclusive club. Your door is open to all – we have tried to shut it. Forgive us, Father. Help us do better. We glorify and honor your son, Emmanuel – God with us – God with all. Holy Spirit is calling all, inviting all, assuring all. Heavenly Father, today is Christmas – a day that signifies that Jesus came for all. Let’s live like this is true – You are the Hope of Christmas. Help us, O Lord. Help us do better. Fill us with all joy and peace as we trust in You, so that we may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit in the lives of our family, our friends, and all that we meet. We love you, Lord. Help us, Father. Help us do better.
