Did any of us perceive or predict what would be ahead of us in 2021?
Of course not.
How could we?
Yet, for me, as I reflect upon the past year, I am aware that even in the difficult, not-so-fun times of 2021, my God, my God was in it all:
When I struggled with insecurity and self-doubt, my God, my God calmed me and assured me.
When I failed and I experienced one set-back after another, my God, my God cheered me.
When I berated and rebuked myself, my God, my God affirmed me.
When I suffered with loneliness, my God, my God comforted me.
When I despaired, my God, my God strengthened me.
When I justified my behavior, my God, my God confronted me.
When I regretted my actions or desired to take back my words, my God, my God consoled me.
When I struggled under the weight of criticism, my God, my God encouraged me.
When I was discouraged and disheartened, my God, my God shouldered my pain and my burden.
When I battled with fear and worry, my God, my God instilled me with His confidence and might.
When I neglected myself, my Father, my gracious Father attended to me.
When I lost a dear, dear friend and sister to COVID-19, my God, my God cared for me.
When I wondered what in the world was going on and why we seem to be going around and around and around in circles, my God, my God steadied me.
And even when I did not feel or perceive the presence of my God, my God was near me –always working, always guiding, always present.
My God’s strengthening words blessed me:
See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.
New International Version, Isaiah 43:19
As I reflect upon the days gone by of 2021, I am grateful that despite my faithlessness and doubt, my God was faithful and true during a time of change, growth, and struggle in the wilderness and wasteland of much of 2021.
And so here we are once again. A new year beckons. We do not know what will happen in the next hour, day, week, month, or year. Yet, we can be confident and sure of this truth, our God is present and at hand and will be with us in and through it all.
He hems us in behind and before, with His hand of comfort, care, love, and protection upon us.
Our God provided his care to us in 2021 and He will be with us to do it all over again in 2022.
Even when we aren’t so sure of what is happening, why it’s happening, or how it’s all happening in 2022, our God will be imparting His blessing and care.
We can trust Him.
He is faithful.
